The genes of the Lykoi cat were adopted in the two sets from a rescue as it was discovered by Patti Thomas in 2010 in Virginia. Thomas named this breed and co-founded it. The second set of domestic shorthairs was discovered by Johnny Gobble in Tennessee. In 2012, The Lykoi was presented in The International cat Association (TICA) and passed by unanimous consent to “Registration Only”.

The breed of Lykoi Cat is now recognized worldwide as a championship breed that is quite competing with other championship breeds. This breed gets a naturally occurring gene in the untamed cat population. Its discovery has its basis in 2011 when two orthogonal litters of kittens were found as unusual cats. Johnny Gobble who discovered this species, bred two of the cats to produce an intentionally bred Lykoi which was the first of its type and proved that this gene is existing. By the passage of time, an extensive outcrossing was there because the mother of one of the kittens was a black domestic.
