Toyger Cat

History and origin of Toyger

The  Toyger cat is a breed of domestic cat. It is one of the newest breeds of Tabby. Toyger is believed to have originated in the U.S in the 1980s. Judy Sugden, a breeder, wanted to develop a breed related to jungle cats. Her mother was also an American cat breeder.

While finding the difference between markings of tabbies in one of the cats, she noticed some distinctive markings. Usually, Tabby breeds have an “M” mark on their forehead, but instead, she found a circular pattern on a tabby cat. This pattern made Sugden think of developing a breed that would impersonate a jungle tiger.

After a lot of hard work, she imported around 40 various cats for several years worldwide with the same type of distinctive markings on their foreheads. In 1993, she finally selected a tabby from India who had spotted markings between the ears.

Due to the efforts of Sugden, Alice McKee and Anthony Hutcherson, the Toyger cat was developed. It highly resembles a tiger as its markings, and the colour is just like a tiger.

The International Cat Association (TICA) registered Toyger in 1993 and officially granted full recognition of a new breed in 2007. Now they are getting popular and getting worldwide recognition.
